FAQ: Upo with Misua (Bottle Gourd Soup with Vermicelli)
1. What is upo?
Upo, or bottle gourd, is a mild-flavored vegetable commonly used in Filipino soups and sautéed dishes. It becomes soft and slightly sweet when cooked.
2. What type of noodles are used in this dish?
Misua, a thin wheat vermicelli noodle, is used for this recipe. It cooks very quickly and thickens the soup slightly.
3. How do I prevent misua from becoming too soft?
Add the misua last and cook it for only 1–2 minutes. Overcooking causes it to break apart and thicken the soup too much.
4. Can I add meat or protein to upo with misua?
Yes. Common additions include ground pork, shrimp, chicken, or even tinapa flakes for extra flavor.
5. Do I need to peel the upo?
Yes. Upo skin is tough and should be peeled before cooking. Remove the seeds if they are large or mature.
6. What seasonings work best for this dish?
Salt, pepper, fish sauce, and a bit of garlic and onion are enough. Some versions add ginger for aroma.
7. Can I make this dish vegetarian?
Yes. Simply omit the meat and use vegetable broth. Misua and upo alone make a light, healthy soup.
8. What dishes pair well with upo with misua?
It pairs well with fried fish, grilled meats, or simple rice meals. It’s also a popular comfort dish on rainy days.
